2012 US Military Pay Charts with 1.6% Raise Over 2011 Rates

In 2011, US armed forces members received a 1.4% pay raise after a drawn out budgetary process. This year the 2012 defense budget, currently only passed in the Republican controlled house, has proposed a slightly larger 1.6% increase in military pay. The House Armed Services Committee, with a vote of 60-1, had set and approved the 1.6% military pay raise.
Fortunately the President has already endorsed the 1.6% raise and it is likely that it will be approved in the Senate once other defense budgetary items are passed. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 bill (H.R. 1540) in the house must then be reconciled with the Senate’s version (S.981) before it can be sent to the President for his signature. Shown below are the proposed 2012 pay charts, assuming the 1.6% raise is enacted:
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the total cost of a 1.6 percent military pay raise would be $1.2 billion in 2012. Because this 1.6 percent pay raise is the same as authorized under current law, CBO does not estimate any additional costs for this provision.
The 1.6 percent basic pay raise for all individuals in the uniformed services would be effective January 1, 2012.
Expiring Bonuses and Allowances : H.R 1540 also proposes an extension, for another year, to DoD’s authority to enter agreements to pay certain lump sum or monthly bonuses and allowances to military personnel. Based on the department of defence’s budget submission for fiscal year 2012, CBO estimates that extending that authority for one year would cost $3.1 billion over the 2012-2016 period.
